The primary aim of the program is to develop a variety of new digitally enabled financial and information services tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers (SHF), which can be delivered at scale. We expect that the most successful models can be replicated in markets where SHF face similar access barriers to financial and technical services and markets. We believe that experimentation presents the surest route to innovation. The more often organizations experiment, iterate and learn from failures, the faster they can inform breakthroughs and successfully drive scale.

The AgriFin Accelerate program identifies and supports market actors, working in partnership with them to accelerate the delivery of demand-driven, viable, digitally enabled suites of financial and farm management products and services for SHF. The program provides a combination of technical expertise and financial support for product and channel innovation with qualified partners on a cost-share basis. The AgriFin Accelerate Engagement model is presented below:

The guiding principles of our engagement model are:

Work with Institutions

AgriFin Accelerate will work with carefully selected partners to build demand-driven, sustainable models of and channels for bundled financial services and farm management tools across digital channels to promote mass uptake. Through intensive country level research, ecosystem outreach and due diligence, we identify partners with high commitment, experience and potential to serve SHFs.

Farmers at the Center

We employ farmer-centric research and design methodologies to address farmer needs and preferences, working to promote active adoption of services for SHFs in each country, with a strong and consistent focus on the needs of women.

Bundled Service Approach

Bundling joins products or services to sell as a single combined or linked unit. Bundled services can reduce service delivery costs while addressing customer awareness and uptake constraints. Given the challenges and degree of exclusion of SHF, bundling brings together players including banks, mobile network operators, smallholder farmer aggregators, rural advisory service providers and platform managers to build comprehensive suites of services. Bundling engages multiple stakeholders on the basis of shared value. Mercy Corps approaches bundling in a phased approach which sequentially adds products linked to farmer trust, demand and capabilities, layering in more complex products as farmers become more familiar with accessing services via mobile and other digital channels.
